Yellow Moong Dal

Yellow Moong dal


  1. Yellow Moong Dal – 1 Cup
  2. Warm water – 4 to 5 Cups
  3. Salt – according to taste
  4. Red Chilli Powder – ½ tsp
  5. Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp
  6. Garam Masala – ½ tsp
  7. Oil – 2 tsp

For Tadka –

  1. Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp
  2. Asafoetida (Hing) – a pinch
  3. Ginger & Garlic Paste – 2 tsp
  4. Onion – 1 chopped
  5. Tomatoes – 2 chopped
  6. Coriander – to garnish


Wash the yellow moong dal 3-4 change of water until it is clear. Let the dal remain soaked in water until it is ready to use. Now heat the pressure cooker and add oil in to it. Once it get heated add Cumin Seeds and asafoetida in to it to crackle. Now add ginger and garlic paste, once it get bit golden brown n colour add onions in to it.

When onions also become brown add tomatoes to it and mix it well. Now, add all the spices to the tadka and let the mixture leave some oil out of it which shows that masala has been cooked.

After the masala, it’s now the turn for yellow moong dal to be added. Mix them well and add the water too. Stir everything together again and close the pressure cooker. It will take around 10-15 minutes for yellow moong dal to get cooked in pressure cooker and if you are cooking it without pressure cooker, you can cover the pot and cook until the yellow moong dal is cooked while stirring in between. When it is cooked garnish it with chopped coriander. You yellow moong dal is ready to serve.

Serving Tip:

You can serve the Yellow moong dal with Jeera Rice or Chapattis. While serving the dal, you can also put some hot desi ghee on to it which adds on the flavours of dal.
